Greetings, people of Luceti! Rock Lee here! Currently, I am training hard so that I can try my hand at becoming a jounin! I would be glad to accept any and all training partners. However... Please only see me before the fourteenth!

After all, I must warn all newer people of the holiday that is coming... the day of the Valentines. On such a day, the Malnosso have been known to use their shifts to twist our emotions! They force on us... the feeling of love! Those who were caught under the mistletoe may have some idea of this effect...

My advice, is to exercise caution! In fact, I intend to seal myself within the Battle Dome once the time comes until I am certain it is over! Please do not come to find me. Alternatively, if you do find me, and I seem to be under the effect of the shift, I ask you to do all that you can to overpower me and keep me restrained until it passes! I thank you all in advance...

[Basically, Lee can be found doing waiting at Seventh Heaven, while training at the same time. He can otherwise be found performing intense training around the village, within the Fllame Building or the forest, or at the Battle Dome.]

Considering the likelihood that you will still end up interacting with people, especially those you already know, you may want to disclaim anything you may do under the effects of the shift ahead of time. Or, at the very least, ensure that everyone knows of the uncontrollable aspects of the shift, as Mr. Lee is attempting to do.

[ Several years. Probably as long as Shikamaru, then. But since Shikamaru isn't here for Kakashi to ask these questions... ]

Will we be aware of our actions while the shift is occurring, or will it be like what happened with the mistletoe?

[ Kakashi's starting to think it might be a good idea for him to stock up on food and barricade himself in his apartment. ]

If it is like past experiments, yes.

[He deliberately pauses, frowning wryly when he continues.]

Whether or not you know something is strange about what you are doing is entirely different. In the past, some have had their memories skewed to believe they are in relationships with others -- acquaintances or complete strangers.

[ Kakashi frowns. This doesn't seem like it's all that different from his own personal experiences with mistletoe. There's a slight pause before he responds. ]

How did they use the journals to invoke the shift? What happened?

[ And then he realizes he hasn't introduced himself yet. ]

My observation of the shift was that, if someone used the journal during the experiment, they would instantly be attracted to the first person they conversed with.

[He gets the explanation out of the way before returning the introduction.]

As for the journal, are you saying that they were attracted to whomever they spoke with through the journal?

They were attracted to the first person that they spoke to over the journals, yes -- a single person. I wouldn't doubt that they could increase the effect so that a person is attracted to multiple people, though.

Hmm, but did anything occur as a result of that attraction?

[ Meaning, did people act upon it? ]

I can't confirm numbers, but the various effects have ranged between infatuation and outright lust. The scientists have sometimes accommodated those effects by changing the environment.

[That is, by providing private rooms to get people in the mood.]

[ There is a pause here, as Kakashi considers this. ]

Are you saying there is a very real possibility of coerced sex or rape, then.

[ Flatly. ]

In that you feel violated after the fact? Yes. The experiment tends to be emotionally crushing for some residents.

[He's not going to dance around that end result.]

[ Kakashi knows what that's like, having gone through something similar during the mistletoe event. ]

So let me get this straight. There's no way to avoid this while staying inside Luceti, because it's not like it's a plant. It might happen at any time, either activated through the journal or just by encountering another person. There's no real indication of how far your uncontrolled actions might go, because what it does is promote either intense infatuation or lust. And the only way to actually successfully avoid this entire thing, is to outright leave the enclosure until at least the end of the month.

Does that sound about right?

About right, yes. You can try to avoid contact altogether, as Mr. Lee mentioned -- by heading off into the forest or away from the village. Because of the way shifts work, there's no guarantee that you will be affected at all when the time comes; if it was an exact science, the effects would not be as varied as they are.

We've been told in the past that the experiment is repeated as often as it is because of the "positive" feelings that it induces -- the romantic high, so to speak. It doesn't take into consideration how it may emotionally wreck some people in the aftermath.

[ There is a long pause as Kakashi takes in this information. Considering.

In the half year or so that he's been here, he's had quite a number of unwanted romantic entanglements no thanks to this place, and would very much like to avoid any more. Especially after the mistletoe. ]

[The process of listing the various ways that the experiment may be executed is sobering. To think that he would have been here for so long that he could observe and report this range of effects.

Of course. It's best to be informed when this is one of the few predictable experiments they run.

How many other predictable experiments are there?

There tends to be some kind of experiment that coincides with a present-giving holiday in December. The experiments during that time usually have a theme of mild affection and receiving presents from the Organization. ...Some years are better than others, with the presents.

Then there's an experiment that's occurred around the turn of the year that leads to a village-wide blackout of sorts. You may recall a time when you could not remember what you were doing for an entire day or two.

[A pause.]

That's about it. There have been experiments that have repeated in the past, but not to the frequency of the ones I've mentioned.

Mm, I remember Christmas [and the mistletoe] and the blackout. [ Which was a bit alarming, but not quite as alarming as the mistletoe. ]

Other experiments occur at random, then.

[ It's more of a question than a statement. ]

With seemingly random effects, yes. They were more frequently done in the first year or two. Now that the Organization is making use of the village for their drafts and missions, the experiments are less frequent.

[He shakes his head once, dismissively.]

Not that one would know if they had appeared sometime during winter.

[He smirks faintly at that, his tone wry as he tilts his head.]

Yes, that's right. I'm the longest remaining resident in Luceti for this cycle.

[ Now that gets Kakashi's attention. He pauses for a moment, then sends a filtered message. ]

In that case, if you have some time, I was wondering if you might be open to a meeting.

[ After all, the alliance Kakashi has in mind wouldn't be much of an alliance without knowledge. And from what Kakashi can tell, if Albert has been at Luceti since the beginning, he would be able to contribute tremendously on that front. ]

[He takes a moment to study the filter, somewhere between amused and pleased by its complexity. It would have been incredibly negligent on his behalf to not have noticed Kakashi's call to action from the other day.

It seemed the man was at least as deliberate as his title would have one assume.]

About your call for an alliance, I presume?

[ "Deliberate" is perhaps, a very good word to describe him. Kakashi rarely does anything unless there's a reason for it. ]

That would be correct.

[Inwardly, he had looked at the idea of the alliance with the wryness of a man who had seen groups come and go in Luceti. Even the SOS Brigade, which had faded since its heyday, was all but officially obsolete with Haruhi having disappeared.

But he certainly wouldn't stop a group from forming. Such movements raised the morale of the entire village.]
