[Mavis relaxes again when Lee sits down, giving his shoulder a pat as she smiles.]

Think of it as active rest. And don't worry, okay? You're one of the best athlete's in our year, ten minutes sitting out for a breather isn't gonna change that.

Your logic is sound! An active rest... Yes! I shall rest as actively as I can! [He sits back, relaxes... and sits back up. Then back down again, then up. The sit-ups ensue.]

You seem to know much about me! I do not even know who you are.

[Every class they share together, Lee winds up sitting in front of her and never gets to notice her while he tries to intensely focus on the schoolwork. Once, he blindly handed her a pen when he heard someone - it actually was someone else - asking for one.]

That's not what I-

[Wow. Just like that it feels like the sun froze over. Mavis' smile disappears as she just stares at him.]

But...We've been in the same class since middle school- you always picked me to be on your team in gym class, even though I wasn't very good.

You really don't remember me?

[He squints. And is kind of feeling horribly guilty at her reaction.]

Ah! I believe that... some bells are beginning to ring! You... are... [He is blanking on the name.]

...Mavis. Mavis Bliss.

[She really shouldn't be so surprised, she did try to blend in with the wall when the schoolyard teasing got really bad but she didn't think it worked that well.]

Yes! That is a name! [He freezes mid situp and pounds his fist against his open as it comes to him.] I think I can remember now... recalling that it was name that sounded particularly pleasant.

Thanks... ["I guess" she almost says but she holds it back. He can't help it, and there's no use holding a grudge. With a slight shake of her head to disperse the hurt she holds up four fingers.]

So. How many fingers do you see now?

I see....

[He leans forward in concern. And he lightly grabs onto her wrist as if to hold the hand still. Then he shouts.]

Mavis! I see only four fingers this time! You have not lost any tragically, have you!?

[The shout makes her jump.]

Whoa- uh, nope, I'm perfectly fine. I'm supposed to have that many, see?

[She wiggles her fingers, leaning back a bit from his intensity.]

And it looks like you're gonna be just fine too.

Ah... That is very relieving. [He quickly relaxes and pulls his hand back.] Thank you for your help, Mavis! I do not know what would have happened if I could not continue performing.

I-it's no problem, really. And I'm sure you'd find something else to focus if you ever did get taken outta the game.

[Pulling her feet up on the bleachers she curls her arms around her knees, hugging them to her chest.]

Just...don't forget me again, okay?

I won't dare to do so again! [He flashes a shining smile and a thumbs up.]

Consider it a promise!

I'll remember that, Lee.

[It's hard not to be affected by his energy, and soon enough she finds herself returning his smile and thumbs up.]

Go on 'n kick butt and all that. Just be careful next time you long jump, land on your feet okay?

I most certainly will! [He keeps up the smile - it's very adorable once she mimics it back to him. She's been so helpful to him. And, he finds himself blurting out without really thinking.]

We should go to the dance together!
